HONDURAS HEAD TO LONDON 2012

The Honduras national football team booked their place in the Olympic tournament, which will be held in London during the summer.

The London Olympics 2012 has been one of the most anticipated tournaments of the summer along with the Euro 2012. Mexico and Honduras have qualified for the London Olympics 2012 after winning in the semi-final for their region.

This comes as a major boost for the Honduras football as a whole given that they were not initially expected to qualify for the major tournament. Mexico qualifying is definitely not a surprise, as they are one of the strongest teams from the region.

Honduras were taking on El Salvador in the semifinal match for the North American and South American teams. They managed to beat El Salvador 3-2 in a thrilling encounter, in which Gerson Rodas of Honduras managed to score two goals to help his team qualify for the Olympics. Mexico, meanwhile, were up against Canada in their semi-final.

It was a match that turned out to be extremely comfortable for Mexico in the end, as they beat Canada 3-1. Following these semi-final matches, Honduras and Mexico will be facing each other in the final of the tournament. Mexico missed out on the opportunity to play in the last Olympics.

“There were a lot of doubters in our country. Our own fans were nervous and didn’t really trust that we could accomplish the goal. This is something to be very proud of,” Honduras coach Luis Fernando Suarez said after the match. This is the third participation for Honduras at the Olympic tournament since 2000. This is indeed a proud moment for the national team, who will be hoping that the plethora of under 23 players will be making huge progress over the next few seasons to be ready for the senior team.
