HONDURAS BEAT CANADA

Jerry Bengtson was the star of the show, as Honduras comfortably beat Canada and secure a place in the next round of the qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Honduras managed to beat Canada 8-1 in the match, with Jerry Bengtson scoring a hat-trick.

This was one of the best performances by the Honduras national team in recent matches. It is certainly not surprising because they came into the match against Canada unbeaten in the last four encounters. This will give them great amount of confidence when facing the likes of El Salvador and Panama in the next few matches.

Canada have now failed to reach the next round of the World Cup qualifying campaign. They are part of the CONCACAF group. This was the penultimate round of qualifying and no team – apart from Mexico – was guaranteed a place in the next round of the qualification stage. Mexico are the only unbeaten team in this stage and they were certain of progression into the next round. Honduras needed a victory from this match in order to seal progression and they started the things with two quick goals early in the match through Jerry Bengtson. Carlos Costly and Mario Martinez scored in the latter stages of the first half to give Honduras a very comfortable 4-0 lead going into the break.

Soon after the break, Honduras showed no signs of slowing down after they increased their advantage by two more goals. Canada’s David Edgar scored an own goal, while Mario Martinez scored another goal through a penalty to make the score 6-0 in favour of Honduras. Iain Hume’s solitary goal in the 76th minute was the only consolation for Canada in the match. Jerry Bengtson completed his hat-trick late in the match to give Canada a huge thrashing.
